Named after Judge William B. Benson is the western gateway to historic Cochise County, where the renegade Geronimo, Chief Cochise, and the Chiricahua Apaches once ran regular raids from the mountains in southeast Arizona. Nearby, off of Interstate 10 in Dragoon, the Amerind Foundation boasts an interesting anthropological and archaeological museum with fine exhibits on Native American cultures. The famous Kartchner Caverns State Park, a pristine underground limestone is 12 miles from town. Each year, Benson celebrates its heritage with Butterfield Overland Stage Days. Other local festivals include Territorial Days and the Benson Tractor Pull featuring antique tractors and engines.
